Therapy Informed By A Multi-Cultural Life

Choosing a therapist should be about more than looking at qualifications or methods. It is important to find someone who understands the complexity of your world. For many people, life involves moving between cultures—whether through work, travel, or family—and this can shape identity, relationships, and emotional wellbeing in ways that aren’t always easy to express.

As a qualified therapist who has lived and worked in the contrasting cultures of the United Kingdom and Qatar, I bring a unique perspective. I want to understand your individual expectations, values, and ways of communicating. My aim is to create a therapeutic space where you feel recognised and respected, whatever your personal heritage.

My family heritage and cross-cultural experiences enrich my professional training. Grounding therapy in real life and providing the opportunity to explore questions of belonging, adaptation, or change with someone who has navigated them too. If you’re looking for support from a therapist who combines professional expertise with a global outlook, this could be the right place to begin.

Qatar

Like much of the Arabian Gulf, the beautiful country of Qatar is home to a diverse range of nationalities.

My experience of living in the region amongst the local community gives me valuable insight into working with clients and supervisees native to the area as well as those juggling the challenges of expat life.

I work with individuals in all the neighbouring GCC countries as well as those based further afield in Africa and Asia.

London, UK

In parallel, London also has a very diverse population. Many people have made their home in this vibrant city, perhaps far from their roots.

My experience of having lived in various cities around the world enables a valuable understanding of the challenges of living and working in the area, both as a local and as an expat.

I work with individuals throughout the United Kingdom, as well as those based in other parts of Europe.

How I Work

I will not tell you what to do, or give advice, but will aim to provide a safe and confidential place in which you can talk about yourself, your problems, concerns and hopes, and where you can decide what, if any, changes you may wish to make in your life.

There are many different theoretical approaches to therapy. The core approach I use is Person-Centred. I have also trained in Solution-Focused Brief Therapy and I have found this approach, when offered from a Person-Centred perspective, can be very helpful for some clients in crisis situations or in very time-limited therapy settings. I enjoy creative pastimes and use creative materials in therapy if clients find it helpful.

Coming from a mixed heritage family I continuously confront my white privilege and our differing experiences in the world and have undertaken additional training in working sensitively within the different cultural perspectives we all hold. Therefore my therapeutic work incorporates a strong focus on cultural empathy where I am open to connecting with and exploring challenges of diversity and oppression in whatever ways we may experience them.

Clients come to me with a wide range issues. I find that, although I would always describe my approach as ‘Person-Centred’, I work slightly differently with each new client I meet as I endeavour to respect the specific needs and personal culture of each individual.

Therapy is a process which takes time and commitment. I hope that we can work together for as long as you feel necessary. Many issues can be resolved in short-term work, whilst others may require longer-term therapy.

Flexibility

Frequency and timing of appointments can be flexible to accommodate your other commitments.

No Pressure

I won’t ask you to commit to a minimum number of sessions, but would suggest that initially we have at least 2 or 3 sessions to get a sense of whether our working together is proving helpful.

My Background

I have been working as Therapist since 2000. I come from a mixed heritage family and my personal experience of transcultural relationships has enriched my understanding of working with cultural differences in therapeutic relationships.

I am a Senior Accredited Psychotherapist (aligned to Column C of SCOPED) and a Specialist Accredited Supervisor. You can find out more about my supervision practice on the Person-Centred Supervision page of this website.

I also hold Senior Professional Member status with The Association for Counselling and Therapy Online. Achieving these titles takes time and experience, extensive training and evidence of a substantial contribution to the wider profession. When we work together you are assured a high standard of professional care.

Prior to training as a Therapist I designed and bought Menswear for well-known international retailers. I have travelled a great deal and lived in many different locations. I feel that, alongside my experience of working in healthcare, education and the voluntary sector, this has given me a rich understanding of different working environments and lifestyles, which helps me to work empathically with each person I meet.

Clients refer to me from a number of sources, many from word-of-mouth recommendations. I am also an Approved Counsellor for Yorkshire Mesmac

which is one of the oldest and largest sexual health organisations in the country. They offer services to various communities including men who have sex with men, people with substance abuse issues, sex workers and LGBTQ+ young people and adults.

In addition to private referrals, I provide therapy for clients of EAPs (Employee Assistance Programmes) and also work with the media, including a live appearance on BBC Radio Leeds Breakfast Show.

I am experienced in open-ended and time-limited therapy and I really enjoy the combination of working as part of a team, within an organisation, and working independently.

I was a member of the BACP Private Practice Executive Committee for over 7 years, latterly holding the position of Divisional Chair. This role involves raising the profile of private practitioners within the BACP and the public, through planning conferences, local events and contributions to the Private Practice journal.

I have previously worked as a Manager for a Counselling Service in Leeds which supported young people aged 13-25 years. Prior to that I also worked as a Manager in an out of hours Crisis Service and Telephone Helpline, working with clients with short term emotional distress as well as those with severe and enduring mental health problems.

Above all else, I find my work extremely rewarding, and feel inspired by all the people I have had the privilege to work with.
